Jeep Grand Wagoneer (SJ)
When the compact XJ took over the Cherokee and Wagoneer names for 1984, AMC kept building the full-size SJ Wagoneer Limited and renamed it Grand Wagoneer. It kept the 1963 body, a carburetted 360 V8, a TorqueFlite automatic, and Selec-Trac four-wheel drive, dressed up with woodgrain sides and a long list of standard luxury features. AMC gave it a new grille and dash for 1986, and Chrysler, which bought AMC in 1987, added items such as an overhead console and keyless entry but left the basics alone. Sales fell steadily after 1986, and the last one was built in June 1991.

| 4.2 L (258 cu in) AMC I6, 2-barrel Net rating from the IFSJA table (1983 to 1986). Wagoneer World says the six was still offered in 1985; the year it was dropped from the Grand Wagoneer is not confirmed. |

Trims and editions
- Grand Wagoneer
- Final Edition dash badge (1991)
Worth knowing
- A single, well-equipped model with woodgrain side panels, which Jeep had used on its top full-size wagon since 1971.
- Chrysler kept the carburetted AMC V8 to the end instead of fitting one of its own fuel-injected engines.
- Dana 44 front axle and 2.73:1 gearing as standard; the rear axle is an AMC unit on the 1989 spec sheet but a Dana 44 from 1987 in the IFSJA table.
- Chrysler announced the end on February 27, 1991, and the last one left Toledo on June 21, 1991.
- Counting the Wagoneer years, the SJ body ran for 29 model years, one of the longest single generations in US history.
Year by year, newest first
- Final model year; some carry a Final Edition badge on the dash.
- Hunter Green metallic paint was offered this year only.
- 4,253 built per Wagoneer World (IFSJA and JeepTech list 1,560).
- Mostly colour changes.
- Production fell to 6,449.
- Overhead console with compass and thermometer, infrared keyless entry, and a rear wiper and washer added.
- A protective cap was added to the tailgate.
- 10,159 built.
- Clearcoat on every paint colour, upgraded audio, and an optional power sunroof (per Wagoneer World).
- First full year under Chrysler; 14,117 built.
- Last AMC-developed year; Chrysler bought AMC during the year.
- New AM/FM stereo with Dolby cassette and four Jensen speakers, revised woodgrain, new interior colours, and P235/75R15 tires.
- Last year for gold-inlay wheels; 14,265 built (IFSJA and JeepTech say 17,265).
- Biggest update of the run: four-section grille, upright hood ornament, new instrument panel with square gauges, and a new steering column with a two-spoke wheel.
- Trac-Lok limited-slip added to Selec-Trac; updated audio and an optional sunroof (per Wikipedia).
- 17,254 built.
- Handling package with a revised front anti-roll bar, gas-charged shocks, and lower-friction rear springs.
- Full vinyl padded roof option; the 4.2 L six was still listed.
- 17,814 built.
- The Wagoneer Limited was renamed Grand Wagoneer as the compact XJ Cherokee and Wagoneer arrived; the Brougham was dropped.
- A cheaper SJ Wagoneer Custom (about US$15,995, no woodgrain) appeared mid-year and lasted only for 1984.
- 20,019 built.
Notes
Production figures disagree for two years: 1987 is 14,265 (Wikipedia, Wagoneer World) or 17,265 (IFSJA, JeepTech), and 1991 is 4,253 (Wikipedia, Wagoneer World) or 1,560 (IFSJA, JeepTech). IFSJA also lists 330 for a 1992 model year but calls that figure a point of contention; offroaders.com says four 1992 models were built. Sources do not say whether figures are calendar or model year. Wheelbase is 108.7 in in the 1989 spec sheet on Wagoneer World; Wikipedia's SJ infobox gives 110 in. Ground clearance of 7.2 in is the rear-axle figure; minimum running clearance is listed as 10.1 in. Towing is 3,500 lb with the Class I/II package and 5,000 lb with the Class III package. The Wagoneer World 1989 spec sheet is the basis for dimensions, tank, and towing; earlier years may differ. The 1993 ZJ-based Grand Wagoneer is not part of this generation.
