Jeep Grand Cherokee
Jeep's upscale midsize SUV, introduced for 1993 and now in its fifth generation, pairing unibody comfort with real four-wheel-drive hardware. The current WL generation added the first three-row model, the Grand Cherokee L, and the first plug-in hybrid Grand Cherokee.

The fifth-generation Grand Cherokee arrived back to front: the stretched three-row Grand Cherokee L came first as a 2021 model, and the two-row version followed for 2022. The new unibody platform has independent suspension front and rear, offered up to five screens including one for the front passenger, and brought the first Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid. The 5.7 L V8 was gone by 2024, the 4xe ended after 2025, and a 2026 refresh added a new face, a 12.3-inch centre screen, and the 324 hp Hurricane 4 turbo four. Off-road Trailhawk and plush Overland models returned for 2027.

The fourth Grand Cherokee used an architecture derived from the Mercedes-Benz M-Class (W166) and moved to four-wheel independent suspension, a much stiffer body, and the new Pentastar V6. Quadra-Lift air suspension and Selec-Terrain traction modes kept its off-road credentials while the cabin moved upmarket. A 2014 update brought an eight-speed automatic and a 3.0 L EcoDiesel, and the 707 hp Trackhawk of 2018 made it one of the quickest SUVs on sale. It was a strong seller and a long-running model, carried over for 2022 next to its replacement.

The third Grand Cherokee grew in length and wheelbase and switched to independent front suspension. The long-serving 4.0 L six gave way to a 3.7 L V6, and the 5.7 L Hemi V8 with cylinder deactivation became the top engine. The 2006 SRT8 added a 6.1 L Hemi and Brembo brakes, turning the Grand Cherokee into a performance SUV, and a Mercedes-built 3.0 L diesel was sold in North America for 2007 and 2008. Wikipedia lists the Commander (XK) as a related model.

The second Grand Cherokee kept the ZJ's 105.9-inch wheelbase but shared almost no parts with it. A new 4.7 L overhead-cam V8 replaced the older pushrod V8s, the spare tire moved under the cargo floor, and Quadra-Drive brought progressive locking differentials. The 2002 Overland added a high-output V8 and set a new luxury level. It sold strongly, with more than 1.4 million delivered through 2004.

The first Grand Cherokee was a larger, more upscale unibody Jeep that went on sale in April 1992 as a 1993 model. It made a memorable debut at the 1992 Detroit auto show, when Chrysler's Bob Lutz and Detroit's mayor drove one through a plate-glass window. The 4.0 L six was joined by a 5.2 L V8, and the 1998 5.9 Limited was billed as the quickest SUV of its year. It won several magazine awards and helped push the SUV into the luxury market.
